Two Outta Three Ain’t Bad – DVDbuyer – Maryland
I own all 3 volumes. This is one of the worst. Volume One is 5 stars and my favorite album. Volume 3 and 4 star and very good with Lazy Lester, Cephas and Wiggins. Unfortunately, this is one of the songs incredibly evil, beginning with the first that is truly terrible. That combine with the voice of Annie Raines' which are absolutely horrible and you have an album of blues harp decent, but certainly not two. Buy volume 1, is fantastic.
Good Solid and Basic Harp Blowing – Mr. Mambo – Burnsville, MN USA
If you love the sound of big, heavy, horn, amplified blues harp, like me, you will appreciate this disc. It's really great to hear so many good players harp on a series of (two) drives. br / br / I have played my harp for many years, but only as an amateur. I play along with recordings and try to learn new things. The first person that really turn me on to blues harp was Paul Butterfield, and he went back to Little Walter, the creator of most amplified riffs that ALLelectricity operators learn how to play, sooner or later. Little Walter was the true genius and innovator of the instrument, without Walter and his influence, no one would play exactly the same way they do today. He casts its shadow across the full spectrum of blues from Chicago. So in a sense, after all he is a bit 'an imitator. Has huge contemporary relevance, such as James Cotton and Big Walter, and to a lesser extent, George Smith, but for my money, Little Walter Jacobs with histhree piece band, its endless experimentation with different instruments and chromatic harps that great bass player, his virtuoso technical skills and creativity phenomenal, it was the greatest blues harmonica player of all time. br / br / One other thing to be said is that, compared to most of the instruments, the blues harp is very, very easy instrument to learn to play in a basic way. Let me clarify: you can practice for a couple of days and if by that time you learned how to (1) single shotnotes and (2) curve, it can sound decent, especially when amplified. (This explains why there are so many guys like Dan Ackroyd and Bruce Willis playing well lead band. Not hurt at all, it's just that the music is not their main concert, it's a hobby. But he liked the music and picked the 'harp, and in no time at all, thought they were good enough to play in front of people. Try that with the slide guitar!). br / br / But really master the instrument you have to play for years, andYou must always push yourself as you try to play all the holes, not only the simplest ones like the # 3 and # 4. And you can spend years copying guys like Little Walter and never be as good as it was only because they are not copying, creation. br / br / That said, it's nice that there are a lot of real good players, and few large, to keep this vital music, and try to grab a listen to those who arrive. We are now in the middle generation, maybe the third or fourth followLittle Walter. I enjoyed playing Charlie Musselwhite for over forty years, ever since I heard the landmark Chicago Blues Today! sets the mid-sixties. More great blues / rock harpists I like to have Magic Dick (one of the true innovators and the creative forces), Rod Piazza (probably the most technically advanced and creative player around today), and James Cotton. Sugar Blue is surprisingly fluent, Billy Branch is an exceptional player. There are so many really good ones thatblows your mind. I'm forgetting a bunch, no doubt. br / br / In this set, the people who stand out for me are Primich Gary, Mark Hummel and Gary Smith. Primich can not sing, but I do. E 'rough, is growly, which surely is not enough. A greater reality is that he sounds like him never to take too seriously. I like what he does with the song for the drinking problem (…." Gal with the guy who owns the liquor store, over the avenue, had bought a sailboat, namedafter making the …"), and his game is really powerful. It seems that might jump out a couple dozen harps every night! Gary also has a wonderful Sonny Boy II style acoustic blues as its latest issue. br / br / Mark Hummel is a fabulous harpist, a veteran of the real scene and is credited with putting the show together. His band backs up all the harpists and the group does a very good job. Marco playing on this disc is solid, but seems modestly take a back seat to others, II think that would not appear intrusive and wanted to shine the spotlight on some of the lesser known players. Pick up one of his own records and hear what he can do. br / br / Gary Smith is a powerful and innovative player and makes some top-notch work here. br / br / RJ Mischo is a pretty good player, but does not get much of a chance to shine for his two numbers. It does not seem to play anything too challenging or different here, but may in some of its disc. Paris Slim plays acompetent acoustic harp on its number, but Sonny Terry (RIP), do not worry. The harpist best woman I've ever heard, Annie Raines, does a decent job, but nothing special. The best thing about her is sexy set his line, "… the smaller the cracker jack box, the bigger the surprise …(!!)", that has a few shouts of appreciation from some boys in the crowd. Johnny Dyer is a beautiful singer and skilled harp player who has been around for many years. br / br / All in all, this is a good set ofdiscs at a good price for those who are interested in learning the basic amplified harp. Not a lot of creativity or innovation, but, hey, that hard to do. If you want, get set double-disc Little Walter, which is where it all began. br / br /
