I can not praise this great enough. I've seen on local public television station here in Chicago when it was first broadcast in early 1970, and had a huge impact on myself. This game, and the very similar 'Awake and Sing "are dramas depression was written by Clifford Odets and originally produced for the stage in the mid-1930s, when they were the cutting edge of contemporary theater and dealt with contemporary issues. These new DVDs contain television productions madetop-notch casts in the early 1970s. I found them unforgettable, and I am pleased to be able to taste again after 30 plus years. They are as good as I tell their stories remember.pThey from one perspective rather specific, ie, that of well-educated middle-and upper-middle-class families Jews living in New York fell on hard times during the depression. These people have pretensions of refinement and high culture, but poverty is rapidly encroaching on the front-grindingand who could not much more primal survival instinct. The main issues are, as I read, is the family love (and sometimes just turns into betrayal or hate under pressure of poverty), what we owe to our fellow and vice versa, or lack of grace under extreme pressure, and the wisdom or folly of optimism for the future. I expect there are themes, subtleties, and symbols that look out, but beers are extremely rich in ideas that can keeppondering long after having seen them. What are most definitely not light entertainment. Dark and somewhat 'depressing, they explore the seriousness economic pressures degrade the quality of life and poison relations with our families, friends, colleagues, neighbors, communities and government. In this, they are not dated and show that while individual issues may change over time, human nature. Layer of the above can Odets 'listening sound a bit' heavy oracademic, but are really compelling dramas, made here by the superb players. Eli Wallach is passionate speech hopelessly optimistic at the end of "Paradise Lost" gets a little 'me always tears in eyed.pThe only reason they would not have given 5 stars is that the dated video source has a slightly blurry with the quality of contrasting color, and sound quality is mediocre. This, in my opinion, is of little importance when dealing with such excellent content. The fact that there are no othercomments here so far suggest that people are passing these up. It is really great stuff. Not to be missed. Buy to promote more of the same DVDs.
